What
Our weekly sessions focus on methodical thinking techniques and hands-on engineering projects. These activities are designed to enhance students' critical thinking skills in a fun, interactive environment. Sessions are adult-supervised and held on-site at local schools.
When
One-hour sessions are held weekly.
Who
The program is led by Matt King, a design and technology teacher at Canfield Middle School, and Ryan Eaton, with assistance from high school student coaches. We seek coaches who have a passion for STEM, a helpful attitude, and a desire to teach and inspire others.
Why
It’s fun and engaging! Kids collaborate to tackle challenges using simple materials, while student coaches gain empathy, confidence, and leadership skills. Participants enhance their problem-solving abilities, deepen their interest in STEM, and build relationships with older student mentors.
How
Our fast-paced program keeps students engaged. Each session starts with a brief discussion about key principles of buildings or bridges, followed by a hands-on challenge to solve a real-world scientific problem. Students work in groups led by student coaches, documenting their hypotheses and results in notebooks. They learn in a structured environment, exploring STEM concepts and testing their ideas across different age groups.
What
Our Math is Cool program connects high school and middle school students who excel in math with 4th-8th graders for an after-school, team-based math competition. Coaches lead younger students in math games, problem-solving activities, and skill-building exercises. Sessions are adult-supervised and held at local schools.
When
Teams meet after school 1-2 days per week for hour-long sessions. Depending on competition dates and whether the team qualifies for masters, the season lasts between 4 and 7 months.
Who
This school-based program is open to all 4th-8th grade students, space permitting. While Math is Cool caters to students who enjoy challenging math, it is open to all ability levels. Any student with a willingness to learn and put in effort can participate and have fun.
Why
It’s not only fun but also rewarding! The program fosters leadership in coaches and develops problem-solving skills in teammates.
What
Mathletes pairs 3rd-5th graders who love math with 1st-3rd graders needing extra help or a challenge. Through math games and teacher-selected activities, mentors strengthen their own skills while fostering a sense of responsibility and community. This small, adult-supervised program (max 12 mentors and 12 mentees) is held at local schools.
When
Weekly 45-minute sessions run for 7-8 weeks, including one mentor training session.
Who
Mentees are nominated by teachers and participate with parent permission. Mentors are chosen through an application and teacher recommendation process. We seek students who enjoy math and have a passion for helping others.
Why
It’s fun and impactful! Early math confidence is critical for long-term success, and peer tutoring has proven to be highly effective. Both mentors and mentees benefit—mentors gain empathy, confidence, and deepen their understanding of math, while mentees improve their skills and build confidence.
How
Each session includes mentor-mentee discussions, math facts games, teacher-selected activities, snack-time problem-solving, and a mentor-led "Mentor Moments" segment. Occasional science experiments add an extra layer of excitement.
What
STEAM Club introduces 2nd-3rd graders to the exciting world of STEAM through art. The program fosters creativity while preparing students for future participation in our STEM Club and Math is Cool programs, which enhance their math skills.
When
This pilot program runs for 8 weeks and is currently hosted at Borah Elementary, with plans to expand to more schools soon. Interested in bringing our STEAM program to your school?
Who
Serving 20 students per session, the program is overseen by a teacher coordinator with assistance from high school students who love art and STEAM. We seek coaches who are passionate about helping others and sharing their love for STEAM subjects.
Why
Art is a powerful gateway into STEM, blending creativity with science, engineering, and design. By exploring concepts like perspectives and angles, students unlock new ways to communicate and problem-solve. STEAM also opens doors for underrepresented students, making STEM subjects more accessible. Participants not only enhance their problem-solving abilities but also build lasting relationships with their student coaches and cement their interest in STEAM.
How
Our program is fast-paced to maintain student engagement, using art projects to teach math concepts and develop critical thinking skills in a fun, hands-on way.
What
STEM Club offers 3rd-4th graders who love STEM a fun, science-focused after-school program designed to develop their critical thinking skills. Sessions are adult-supervised and held at local schools.
When
The program runs for six weeks, with one-hour sessions each week.
Who
The club is led by a teacher coordinator with support from high school students who are passionate about STEM and helping others. We seek coaches who are eager to share their love of science and guide younger students.
Why
STEM Club is not only fun but also essential for fostering complex and progressive thinking. Kids collaborate to solve scientific challenges, while coaches build empathy, confidence, and leadership skills. Participants enhance their problem-solving abilities, deepen their interest in STEM, and form meaningful relationships with their student coaches.
How
Each session moves quickly to keep students engaged. Activities include discussions on what makes a great scientist, solving a scientific problem in groups, and documenting hypotheses and results in notebooks.
